ISSI-BJ Forum on “Surveying the Hot Baryons Within the Milky Way” successfully held on 09–10 June 2025

On June 09–10, 2025, the ISSI-BJ Forum “Surveying the Hot Baryons Within the Milky Way” was held successfully. About 30 leading scientists from a range of institutes took part in the event, which was convened by Profs. Junjie Mao (Tsinghua University, China), Ping Zhou (Nanjing University, China), Johan Comparat (Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, Germany), and Gabriele Ponti (Brera Astronomical Observatory, National Institute of Astrophysics, Italy).

The Forum focused on the galactic ecosystem, one of the three major themes identified in the Astro 2020 Decadal Survey in the U.S. Participants discussed hot baryons—best observed through X-ray space missions—which play a crucial role in tracing feedback processes from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and stars that drive galaxy evolution. Scientists also analyzed the Milky Way, our home galaxy, as a key template for understanding the galactic ecosystem, highlighting significant findings on hot baryons observed with SRG/eROSITA, XMM-Newton, EP/WX, and other missions.

As scientific output, a new volume of the Taikong will be published covering the content of this Forum, for distribution to both the science community and space science institutions.
