ISSI-BJ Forum on "Probing Solar Polar Regions" successfully held on 07-08 November 2024

On November 07-08, 2024, the ISSI-BJ Forum on “Probing Solar Polar Regions” was held successfully. The event saw the participation of around 50 leading experts from different institutions across ten countries. The Forum was convened by Pengfei Chen (Nanjing University, China), Fabio Favata (Imperial College London, UK), Linghua Wang (Peking University, China), Tripathi Durgesh (Inter-university Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, India), Robert F. Wimmer-Schweingruber (Kiel University, Germany), Yuanyong Deng (National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China), Hui Tian (Peking University, China).

During the Forum, participants discussed how SPO observations will advance our understanding of the most important questions in solar physics. More importantly, scientists debated on advices and international collaborations regarding the instrument design, science preparation and synergies with other missions. Experts decided to hold a Forum on this subject because the solar polar regions are vital in controlling solar activity and driving space weather, but remain as the least-known mysterious territory on the Sun. The proposed Solar Polar-orbit Observatory (SPO) is expected to make breakthroughs on the top-level scientific objectives.

As a scientific output, a new volume of the “Taikong” magazine will be compiled, featuring the content of this Forum, which will be distributed to the scientific community and space science institutions.
