ISSI-BJ Forum on “Toward detection of Earth-like planets in the Universe” successfully held on 24-25 June 2024

On June 24–25, 2024, the ISSI-BJ Forum on “Toward Detection of Earth-like Planets in the Universe” was held successfully. The event saw the participation of around 35 leading experts from 24 different institutions across seven countries. The Forum was convened by Jian Ge (Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China), Fabio Favata (Imperial College London, UK), Steve Howell (NASA Ames Research Center, USA), Jessie Christiansen (NASA Exoplanet Science Institute, Caltech, USA), Chelsea Huang (Centre for Astrophysics, University of Southern Queensland, Australia), Shude Mao (Department of Astronomy, Tsinghua University, China), and Sharon Wang (Department of Astronomy, Tsinghua University, China).
During the Forum, participants reviewed the current status of observational and theoretical studies, as well as data analysis approaches concerning exoplanets, including Earth-like and free-floating planets, their formation and evolution. They discussed lessons learned from previous space missions in the search for small-sized planets, presented progress and plans for ongoing space missions aimed at searching for and characterizing Earth-like planets, and engaged in discussions on international collaborations.
As a scientific output, a new volume of the "Taikong" magazine will be compiled, featuring the content of this Forum, which will be distributed to the scientific community and space science institutions.
