ISSI-BJ Forum on “Detecting Missing Baryons in the Universe” successfully held on 20-21 July 2023
On July 20-21, 2023, ISSI-BJ forum on “Detecting Missing Baryons in the Universe” was successfully held. About 20 leading scientists from 5 countries participated in this forum, which was convened by Joel Bregman (UMich, USA), Wei Cui (Tsinghua University, China), Maurizio Falanga (ISSI-BJ, China), Taotao Fang (XMU, China), Dan McCammon (UW–Madison, USA), Kazuhisa Mitsuda (ISAS/JAXA, Japan), Jan-Willem den Herder (SRON, The Netherlands), Noriko Yamasaki (ISAS/JAXA, Japan), Feng Yuan (CAS, China).
The forum main aims divided the meeting in 5 sessions: Census of cosmic baryons; Theoretical understanding of missing baryons; Recent observations of WHIM and implications; High resolution X-ray spectroscopic observations and modeling; Synergies and collaborations. In particular, Professor Cui Wei of Tsinghua University introduced the development of the Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) program, an independent satellite project developed by China, and the Diffuse X-Ray Explorer (DIXE) program, a project of the Chinese Space Station.
On the theoretical side, Professor Yuan Feng of the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, and Professor Houjun Mo of the University of Massachusetts, presented the recent results of many modeling on the galactic and cosmic scales, and pointed out that the main bottleneck in the current stage of development is the lack of observational data.
As scientific output, the ISSI-BJ magazine <<TAIKONG>> will be devoted to the content of this Forum for distribution to the science communities and space science institutions.
