Tianwen-1, China’s first Mars exploration mission, was launched on July 23rd 2020 and successfully entered Mars orbit on February 10th 2021. After surveying the potential landing area for about three months using the Tianwen-1 orbiter, the Zhurong rover successfully landed on the Martian surface on May 14th 2021. The landing site is on the Utopia Planitia of northern lowland, Mars (109.925E 25.066 N). The Zhurong rover has travelled more than 1000 meters till August 30th 2021 and collected scientific data on its way. Carried thirteen scientific payloads (7 on the orbiter and 6 on the rover), Tianwen-1 mission aims to investigate the Martian morphology, geology, mineralogy, space environment, and the distributions of water ice. The speaker will present an overview and the scientific goals of Tianwen-1 mission.

About the Speaker

LIN, Honglei, associate professor, Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGGCAS). Dr. Lin received his PhD at Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2018 and then worked  with Prof. Weixing Wan at IGGCAS for postdoctoral research from 2018 to 2020. His research focuses on the theoretical and methodological problems in hyperspectral remote sensing exploration on the Moon and Mars. He is one of the core members of the scientist group of Chang’E-4 mission. He is also a member of chief-scientist team of Tianwen-1 mission and engaged in the study on Martian surface compositions using Tianwen-1 data.
